Web Design Statistics 2026: Fonts, Frameworks and Markup on 128.3 Million Websites
82.8% of websites load at least one external JavaScript file: 106,227,217 of the 128,273,296 websites in this report. Half the web, 50.7%, carries an Open Graph tag but only 27.8% the title, description and image a share preview is drawn from, 12.5% tell phone browsers to block zooming in, and Cloudflare's analytics beacon sits in the HTML of more homepages than a Google Analytics 4 tag does.

- Methodology and sources
- 82.8% of websites load at least one external JavaScript file and 75.6% at least one external stylesheet: 106,227,217 and 96,948,229 of 128,273,296. The average homepage references 8.3 JavaScript files and 5.5 stylesheets.
- Cloudflare is the outermost network in front of 21.7% of websites, 27,781,464, more than every other CDN and edge network together at 13.0%. It served the homepage from its cache for 8.8% of the websites it fronts, against 73.5% of the websites behind Vercel.
- Google Fonts is on 33.3% of websites, 42,660,074. Leaving out the exact font links found unchanged on 0.10% of websites or more, the mark of a theme or builder, Roboto, Open Sans and Inter are the families websites load most.
- jQuery is still a separate file on 29.8% of websites, 38,264,176, and 55.1% of those copies are the one WordPress core ships. 6.9% of all websites load a version older than 3.5.0, the release that fixed two cross-site scripting flaws.
- 50.7% of websites carry an Open Graph tag, 65,095,137, but only 27.8% carry the title, description and image a share preview is drawn from. JSON-LD naming an organisation, a website or another entity is on 31.2% of websites.
- 12.5% of websites, 16,077,259, set a viewport that tells phone browsers to block zooming in, and so do 16.8% of websites in the Tranco top million. Weebly sets it on 34.0% of its websites, Wix on 0.03%.
- 15.4% of websites carry analytics their owner chose, 19,809,644, and 28.9% carry some once Cloudflare's beacon, Jetpack Stats and platform-wide tracking IDs count. Cloudflare's beacon alone is in the HTML of 11.3% of homepages, more than the 8.4% with a Google Analytics 4 tag there.
- 3.0% of websites, 3,853,151, still carry a Universal Analytics tag their owner installed and no Google Analytics 4 tag or tag manager to replace it, more than three years after Google stopped processing its data. That is 26.8% of the websites with owner-installed Google Analytics.
- Websites in the Tranco top million carry analytics their owner chose 2.7 times as often as websites outside the list: 40.5% of them, 247,039 websites, against 15.0%, and carry a meta description on 75.8% against 51.4%.
- 77.3% of the 244,751 web design companies with a company profile declare 10 staff or fewer. Of the 93 that claim more than 10,000, 76 have fewer than ten employees listed on their profile.

68.5% of websites load both external JavaScript and an external stylesheet, 14.3% only JavaScript and 7.1% only CSS. The other 10.1% reference no external file at all: their code sits inside the page, or the page is a bare placeholder. External here means a separate file the HTML names, on the website's own domain or another host.
The web, in this report, is 128,273,296 websites: domains whose latest fetch returned a readable page, starting from the rule of the SSL report with parked domains, for-sale pages and redirects to another domain removed. The section on which websites are counted gives every step.

At least 34.7% of websites answer with the signature of a known CDN or edge network, a floor because some builders and CDNs send no such header. Cloudflare is the outermost network for 21.7%, more than every other network together at 13.0%, and 46.1% of the websites behind a CDN also carry a hosting platform's marker. The hosting report measures Cloudflare on a different layer, the owner of the address a domain points at.
At least a third of the web reaches its visitors through somebody else's network, and for nearly half of those websites it comes with their hosting platform.

Across all websites, a homepage references 8.3 external JavaScript files and 5.5 stylesheets on average, 13.8 files in all. Among the websites that load at least one JavaScript file the average is 10.0, and among those with at least one stylesheet it is 7.3 stylesheets.
A long tail pulls the average up. 52.8% of websites load four JavaScript files or fewer, while 1.3% load fifty or more and 0.89% reference a hundred or more scripts and stylesheets between them. The largest single count is 3,445 JavaScript files on one homepage.
These are the files named in the HTML the server sent. A script that loads more scripts once it runs, a stylesheet imported by another stylesheet and a font requested from CSS are not counted, so the real number of requests is higher. A Google Fonts link counts as one stylesheet.
A typical homepage loads a handful of files, and the average is set by a minority that load dozens, so a mean says little about what any one website loads.
Half of homepages are 53.2 KB of HTML or smaller, uncompressed
| Homepages at or under the size | Uncompressed HTML size |
|---|---|
| A quarter | 10.2 KB |
| Half (the median) | 53.2 KB |

The HTML of a homepage, the document alone without the files it loads, is 53.2 KB or smaller on half of websites, measured uncompressed. A quarter are 10.2 KB or smaller and three quarters 136.8 KB or smaller, while one in ten is larger than 318.9 KB and one in a hundred larger than 1.4 MB.
The average is 136.7 KB, 2.6 times the median and level with the size three quarters of homepages stay under, because a tail of very large pages pulls it up. The sizes cover 126,055,660 websites, 98.3% of those in this report.
One exact size stands out: 1,577,421 homepages, 1.3% of those measured, are exactly 32,080 characters long, the most common single size. The size alone does not say what those homepages show.
CSS and JavaScript sizes are not measured. The crawler does not download the files a homepage names, so the weight of its scripts, stylesheets, images and fonts, and with them the full weight of the page, is not in these figures; the section above counts those files instead.
A typical homepage document is small and a minority of very large ones set the average. What a page weighs in full depends on the files it loads, which this report counts but does not weigh.

Cloudflare adds a script at its edge on 12.5% of websites: its analytics beacon, the decoder behind email address obfuscation, or Rocket Loader, which defers all of a page's JavaScript until after rendering.

12.7% of websites load at least one file from a public library CDN. cdnjs, which runs on Cloudflare's network, is the largest at 5.1%, ahead of jsDelivr at 4.8%, the CDN Bootstrap's own quick start loads from, and Google Hosted Libraries, Google's CDN for popular open-source libraries, at 2.9%.
Fewer than one website in five loads its files only from its own domain. A homepage often draws on a font service, a builder's servers or a public CDN, and a change at any of them reaches millions of websites at once.

jQuery is a separate file on 29.8% of websites, 38,264,176. 55.1% of those copies are the one WordPress registers and loads from its own core files, and 20.2% of WordPress websites load no jQuery file at all. Font Awesome is on 16.3% of websites, Bootstrap on 10.7% and Swiper on 6.9%.
Platforms decide several rows. 84.6% of the websites loading React as a file of its own are Wix websites, and so are 61.7% of those loading Underscore or Lodash, because Wix loads both on the websites it builds. A built framework shows only where it leaves a footprint: 3.6% of websites load files from a Next.js /_next/static path, 99.9% of them away from WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Shopify and GoDaddy's builder, and 3.5% load the index file from /assets/ with the hashed name a Vite build generates.

48.6% of jQuery websites load version 3.7.1. 28.1% of the websites whose jQuery copy shows a readable version load one older than 3.5.0, which fixed two cross-site scripting flaws including CVE-2020-11022, and they are on 6.9% of all websites. jQuery 4 is on 0.02% of websites.
Tailwind's Play CDN, which its makers describe as designed for development purposes only and not intended for production, is loaded by 0.74% of websites, 943,788.
Each library is recognised by its file name or the host it loads from, the footprint Custom Scan searches by, so every figure here is a floor. The React, Vue and Tailwind rows count only websites that load them as files of their own; a website that compiles them into its own bundle leaves no name behind.
jQuery survives mostly through WordPress. More than half of the copies are the one WordPress core still loads by default, and every copy older than 3.5.0 is a version released before April 2020.

At least 6.6% of websites load font files from their own host. That is a floor: it counts only fonts declared in the page itself, and most self-hosted fonts are declared inside a stylesheet the crawl does not open. The HTTP Archive's Web Almanac, which reads every stylesheet, finds self-hosted fonts on over 71% of the pages it tests, from its own list of popular sites rather than every website.

Themes and builders put the same exact font link on very many websites, so a raw count of families measures templates. 8.5% of websites load one of the 28 exact Google Fonts links found on 0.10% of websites or more, and the chart leaves those links out. Counted that way, Roboto leads at 3.4% of websites, ahead of Open Sans and Inter. Counting every link, Montserrat comes first at 5.5%.
A Google Fonts link makes each visitor's browser request the font from Google's servers, which its privacy notes describe; Bunny Fonts and self-hosting are the two ways round it that a crawler can see.
A third of the web loads fonts from one Google service, and for 25.7% of those websites the link is one a theme or builder carries unchanged. Outside those links, the families loaded most are the same handful of sans-serifs.

50.7% of websites carry at least one Open Graph tag, 65,095,137, but only 27.8% carry the title, description and image a share preview is drawn from. A meta description, which search engines can use for the snippet under a result, is on 51.8%, and a canonical link on 46.2%; 1.7% of websites point their canonical at another domain.
40.3% of the websites in this report carry a Twitter or X card. The content language report counts Twitter cards on 30.0% of a wider base, 158.5 million websites.
17.1% of websites still carry meta keywords, which Google said in 2009 it does not use for ranking. 3.8% of websites mark up two or more language versions with hreflang. Of the websites that declare a character set, 97.8% declare UTF-8, the only one the HTML standard allows. 37.9% of homepages have no H1 heading with readable text and 15.1% have more than one.

JSON-LD naming an entity is on 31.2% of websites. WebSite is the most common type, on 80.4% of the websites with JSON-LD, and Google reads it for the site name it shows in results. Organization follows at 45.1% and WebPage at 38.5%; LocalBusiness, the type a local firm would use, is on 12.5%. The types counted are objects that carry a name, an address or a URL; breadcrumbs and FAQ blocks carry none and stay out of the chart.

Where a platform is detected, it largely sets these numbers. Wix puts JSON-LD on 93.9% of its websites, the GoDaddy Website Builder a web app manifest on 98.4%, and Weebly leaves out the H1 on 96.8%. Websites on no platform we can name carry Open Graph on 37.1% and JSON-LD on 18.4%. Squarespace's Open Graph share, 47.1%, is low because 50.2% of its websites in the base show a coming soon or other placeholder title, and the CMS report gives each platform's size.
On hosted builders, share previews are a platform default: where a builder fills them in, nearly every website has them. On websites with no platform detected, 37.1% carry Open Graph and 18.4% JSON-LD, and most websites lack the full share card.

12.5% of websites, 16,077,259, set a viewport that tells the browser to stop a visitor pinching to zoom: 8.1% with user-scalable=no and 11.4% with a maximum scale of 1, many with both. WCAG 2.2 asks that text can be enlarged to twice its size, and in browsers that honour the setting, pinch zoom, the usual way to do that on a phone, is gone.
Ranked websites block zoom more often: 16.8% of websites in the Tranco top million do, against 12.4% of websites outside the list. The HTTP Archive's Web Almanac counts 19% of the mobile pages it tests in 2025 that restrict scaling one way or the other, a figure from popular sites that sits closer to the top million's.
Safari has ignored user-scalable since Safari 10, so on an iPhone the setting mostly does nothing; it takes effect in other mobile browsers. Themes and builders decide it: 34.0% of Weebly websites and 17.3% of WordPress websites block zoom, against 0.03% of Wix websites and 0.03% of Squarespace's.
Zoom blocking travels with templates. Builders that never set it have almost no websites with it, while on WordPress, where the theme writes the viewport, 17.3% of websites carry it.

15.4% of websites carry analytics their owner chose, 19,809,644. That count leaves out what an owner may never have picked: Cloudflare's Web Analytics beacon, Jetpack Stats, and tracking IDs found on 2,500 websites or more, which belong to a platform or a default page. Counting them, 28.9% of websites carry some analytics.
Cloudflare's beacon is in the HTML of 11.3% of homepages, more than the 8.4% with a Google Analytics 4 tag there. 98.3% of those websites sit behind Cloudflare, which injects the beacon itself under an automatic setup that is on by default, and for 74.0% of them it is the only analytics in the HTML.
Google Analytics in any version is in the HTML of 14.1% of websites. 4.9% of websites carry a Tag Manager container of their own, which configures and deploys tags from Google and third parties, and 50.1% of those show no other analytics in the HTML, because what the container fires is decided after the page loads.

What a crawler can see depends on the platform. Google Analytics is in the HTML of 20.0% of WordPress websites and 26.8% of Shopify stores, against 1.7% of Wix websites, where tracking is set up inside the builder rather than written into the page. Every figure in this section is a floor for that reason.
About one website in six carries analytics its owner chose that the crawl can see. The rest of the analytics the crawl sees arrives with the CDN, the platform or a default page, and Cloudflare's beacon outnumbers Google Analytics 4 in the HTML.

3.0% of websites, 3,853,151, carry a Universal Analytics ID their owner installed and no Google Analytics 4 tag or tag manager that could send their data anywhere else. Google's standard Universal Analytics properties stopped processing data on 1 July 2023, so what these tags send is no longer processed.
That is 26.8% of the 14,360,373 websites with Google Analytics their owner installed. 44.7% of the dead tags load through gtag.js, the script Google Analytics 4 uses too, so the move would have taken one new ID. 34.1% of them load the older analytics.js, and 1.3% and 1.0% still load ga.js and urchin.js, which Google had replaced years before Universal Analytics ended.
A dead tag costs its owner nothing, so nothing prompts anyone to remove it, and these websites have gone more than three years without Google Analytics processing their traffic.

Websites in the top million carry owner-chosen analytics on 40.5% against 15.0% of websites outside the list, and carry a meta description on 75.8% against 51.4%. Between the same two groups, Open Graph rises from 50.6% to 59.1%, and a known CDN from 34.5% to 50.9%.
The big difference sits between ranked and unranked rather than inside the list. Websites in the list but outside the top million carry owner-chosen analytics on 37.2%, close to the top million's 40.5%, so the line rank draws is mostly between websites that have an audience and websites that may have none.
Google Fonts goes the other way. Among websites that load at least one external file, it is on 36.9% of unranked websites and 35.6% of those in the list but outside the top million, and falls only inside the top million, to 24.4% between ranks 10,001 and 100,000. jQuery is on 50.2% of the listed websites outside the top million that load files, against 32.9% unranked, and Next.js reaches 9.3% between ranks 10,001 and 100,000.
Ranked websites carry more metadata and more owner-chosen analytics than unranked ones, and inside the top million Google Fonts falls. On analytics and metadata, the ranked tail sits much closer to the top million than to the unranked web.

Matched websites of every declared size carry more Open Graph, JSON-LD and analytics than websites with no company page. Owner-chosen analytics is on 36.0% of the largest companies' websites and 29.4% of the smallest, against 14.0% of websites with no company.
Company size is not the only thing that changes across these bands. The largest companies' websites sit on a named platform less often, 49.5% against 62.7% for the smallest, and are ranked far more often, 35.5% against 3.0%, and both change what a homepage carries.
Structured data follows the platform more than the company. On WordPress every size band carries it at nearly the same rate, and the whole fall with size happens on websites not on WordPress.

A link from a homepage to a web design company can mean the company built the website, sold its theme or runs the builder it sits on, and the data cannot tell which, so the table counts the websites each domain is linked from. 21.2% of websites with outbound links link to a domain that a web design company lists as its own, mostly website builders, and 11.7% to that domain's homepage. Platforms lead: GoDaddy is linked from 84,297 websites, only 199 of them to its homepage, and Squarespace from 61,894, many of them its own coming soon screens.
The most linked theme vendor is GeneratePress, on 1,515 websites. Agencies come further down: the most linked, Italiaonline, is linked from 514 websites, and a few dozen links are enough to make the list below.

Web design is a trade of very small firms, and the companies the web links to are mostly platforms, hosts and theme makers rather than agencies.

The SSL report's rule gives 134,614,196 websites on the current crawl: domains whose latest fetch answered 200 with a readable page, at the apex of a registration, with parked domains removed. This report takes out 6,340,900 more, 4.7% of them, in two steps.
The first removes 2,674,645 for-sale pages, 2.0%, which the parking signals miss because they load a sales script rather than a parking page: Parity's on 2,128,357 websites, Spaceship's on 394,980 and DomainMarket's on 151,308. The second removes 3,666,255 websites, 2.7%, whose homepage redirects to another registered domain, because the headers and tags stored for them belong to two websites at once. 128,273,296 websites remain, 95.3% of the rule's.

Placeholder pages stay in. 8.4% of the websites in this report, 10,757,401, have a title that marks a placeholder: a coming soon or under construction page on 3.1%, a parked or reserved notice the parking signals did not catch on 2.2%, a server or hosting default page on 1.8%, and an error page or a suspended account on the rest. 8.3% of homepages ask search engines not to index them, and 12.2% are one or the other.

Squarespace stands out: 50.2% of its websites in the base show a placeholder title and 52.9% a noindex homepage, nearly all of them Squarespace's own coming soon screen. That is why its Open Graph share in the markup section looks low.

Setting placeholder pages aside would raise every share, some more than others. Open Graph would rise from 50.7% to 55.3%, a meta description from 51.8% to 55.9% and JSON-LD from 31.2% to 34.1%. Zoom blocking barely moves, from 12.5% to 12.8%.
A share of the web in this report is a share of 128.3 million websites that answer with a page of their own, and more than one in ten of them is a placeholder or asks not to be indexed. The SSL report counted 115.8 million under its rule; the same rule gives 134.6 million on the current crawl, because the recrawl has replaced rows since, and this report's two extra steps take it to 128.3 million. Placeholder pages stay because the web is full of them, and a share that hid them would describe a tidier web than the one visitors meet.
Frequently asked questions
How many websites use JavaScript? 82.8% of websites load at least one external JavaScript file, 106,227,217 of 128,273,296. Scripts written inside the page are not counted, so the share with any JavaScript is higher.
How many JavaScript and CSS files does a website load? The average homepage references 8.3 external JavaScript files and 5.5 stylesheets. Half of websites load 4 JavaScript files or fewer, and a minority loading dozens pulls the average up.
What percentage of websites use a CDN? At least 34.7% of websites answer with a known CDN's signature in their response headers, a floor because Squarespace's and GoDaddy's builder front ends and Akamai send none. Cloudflare is in front of 21.7%, more than every other CDN together.
How many websites still use jQuery? 29.8% of websites load jQuery as a separate file, 38,264,176. 55.1% of those copies are the one WordPress core loads.
What is the most popular Google Font? Leaving out the exact font links found unchanged on 0.10% of websites or more, Roboto is the most used family, on 3.4% of websites, ahead of Open Sans and Inter. Counting every link, Montserrat comes first.
What percentage of websites use Open Graph or schema markup? 50.7% of websites carry an Open Graph tag and 27.8% a full share card, the title, description and image together. JSON-LD naming an entity is on 31.2%, most often a WebSite or Organization object.
How many websites use Google Analytics? Google Analytics is visible in the HTML of 14.1% of websites, and Google Analytics 4 on 8.4%. Both are floors, because a tag fired from Google Tag Manager or a builder's own scripts does not appear in the HTML.
How many web design companies are there? 244,751 company profiles list designing or building websites among their specialties. 77.3% of them declare 10 staff or fewer.
Methodology and sources
The population. Every share is of the 128,273,296 websites in this report, or of a part of them the sentence names. They are the websites whose latest fetch answered 200 with a readable page, at the apex of a registration as the Public Suffix List defines it, with parked domains removed as in the SSL report, and then for-sale pages and redirects to another registered domain removed as the section on which websites are counted describes. Websites were crawled between 23 May 2026 and 18 October 2026, one row per domain at its latest fetch. The SSL report counted 115.8 million websites under the first of these rules; the recrawl has replaced rows since, so the same rule gives 134.6 million today, and the two removals bring it to 128.3 million.
Homepage only, no JavaScript run. Every figure comes from the HTML of the homepage and the response headers of the same fetch. The crawler runs no JavaScript, so a library, font, tag or widget that another script loads is invisible, and every share of websites carrying one is a floor. A file counts when the HTML names it in a script or link element; a stylesheet imported by another stylesheet, a font requested from CSS and anything compiled into a website's own bundle do not.
HTML size. The size is the length of the homepage HTML after the crawler decompressed it and decoded it as UTF-8 text. It is the uncompressed size, not what crossed the network: a page sent with Brotli or gzip travels at a fraction of it, and the compressed length is not stored for most websites. It counts characters, which equal bytes in plain ASCII, so a page written in a non-Latin script is somewhat larger in bytes than shown. A KB here is 1,000 characters.
Libraries, fonts and tags. A library is recognised by its file name or the host it loads from, a font service by its host, and a Google Fonts family by the family named in the link. A Google Fonts link that appears unchanged on 0.10% of websites or more counts as a template and stays out of the family ranking. Analytics, pixels, consent tools and chat widgets are recognised by their script hosts, tag IDs and inline snippets, and a tracking ID found on 2,500 websites or more counts as a platform's, not the owner's.
CDNs. A CDN counts when the homepage response carries its signature, such as Cloudflare's cf-ray header or Vercel's x-vercel-id, and the network in front is the outermost one; a response from Google's front end alone counts as no CDN, and Squarespace's and GoDaddy's builder front ends and Akamai send no header the crawler can read.
Popularity and company size. Rank bands use the Tranco list 38LNL, generated on 24 August 2026, each band excluding the ones above it. Only 423 of the top 1,000 names are websites in this report, so that row shows a direction and not a size. A website is matched to a company when exactly one company profile names it as its website, and its size band is the one that company declares. Platforms are read from the same homepage fetch, by the generator tag and the asset hosts of each site builder, so every platform count is a floor; the 0.1% of websites with no platform reading are left out of the platform tables.
Web design companies. A company counts once when its profile's specialties name designing or building websites in English or one of more than a dozen other languages, from Arabic and Czech to Spanish and Turkish, and its industry is an agency, design, marketing or IT industry. The website maker tables count the websites in this report whose homepage links to a company's registrable domain, out of the 980,082 websites with outbound links. Domains linked mostly from for-sale pages are removed, and every domain down to rank 87, where the agencies table ends, was classified by hand as a platform, theme vendor, agency, host or registrar, or something else, from its own homepage and the websites that link to it.
Not measured here. The weight of the scripts, stylesheets and other files a page loads, and so the full weight of a page; only the homepage HTML is sized, uncompressed. Colours, layouts and images. Core Web Vitals and load times. Markup written as microdata or RDFa. Whether tags fire before a visitor consents. Who built a website, since no "website by" credit is stored. Inner pages. Change over time, which needs a second snapshot.
